Some days I go solo climbing and think to myself, “Man, this is awesome! So light, so simple, so unencumbered… I love this!” Other days I’m out solo climbing and I end up thinking, “What am I doing here? If I were climbing with a partner I’d be doing a harder route, having more fun, and taking less risk. This is stupid. Am I not yet old and wise enough to have outgrown this activity?” Yesterday began as one of the former; Soloing up Aguja Guillaumet felt like a joy, and I marveled at how, despite a heavy pack and somewhat poor conditions, it felt so casual compared to my first solo of the peak, eight years ago. While traversing along Guillaumet’s south ridge I encountered snowy conditions, stuck ropes, and my heavy pack felt more and more like a burden… By the time I joined the Argentina route on Aguja Mermoz, a route I also first soloed eight years ago, the day had morphed into the second category, and I said to myself, “What am I doing here?” Then I rappelled off! @patagonia_climb @petzl_official @lasportivana @ El Chaltén
