That healthy rain that fell on Monday and Tuesday also dumped some healthy snow in our SO CAL mountains as well. So Ellen and I wanted to find some of the white stuff. Being as it snowed Tuesday night, finding an accessible trailhead that was safe to drive to limited our options. We decided to hike up Bear Canyon to Mt Baldy and down the ski hut trail to Manker Flats. When we attempted to set up the car stagger we found that the road was too icy to reach Manker, so we drove back down and parked at the Ranger station and started up Bear. In no time we were hiking in snow. Once we got beyond the brushy switchbacks and into the pines the trail disappeared, but because there was good snow coverage, we were able to just go straight up the ridge, intersecting the trail from time to time. When we got to 8,500’ we called it and had lunch at a lovely flat area in the sun with a view. We decided to not go any further because there was a cliff to the left of us and a long traverse on the snowy steepish slope on the right side of the ridge. We hiked back down and had supper at PF Chang’s. It was a rather short day, but I was thoroughly knackered when I got home at 6:00.
What a great day we had! You guys need to go up as soon as possible because it is melting fast!
