Today a group of us American climbers got out into the mountains to stash gear as the forecast shows signs of good weather in near future. As I passed many hikers I thought it is a shame most of the people in general public see us as adrenaline junkies that are trying to "conquer" mountains. Conquistadors of the useless, yes, but conquering a mountain, sounds so silly. These lumps of rock and ice will be here long after we are gone. By trying to climb these peaks most people I know and I are seeking mental and physical challenges, work out riddles, face personal fears and insecurities, travel to beautiful places, meet like minded people, or be alone, focus on one thing only, be in a meditative state while ascending terrain where falling is not an option.
Adrenaline rush...working in ER, I get adrenaline rushes at times. While climbing Cerro Torre recently, our ascent from town and descent back to town was a 6 day ordeal. That would be way too much adrenaline to burn through...if you are climbing, feeling the adrenaline rush is something you hope to avoid...
Anyhow, the waiting and weather guessing game begins..will it be too cold to rock climb? Will our objectives be iced over? It being my 3rd season here, all i can say is check the weather before hiking out and have your whole kit ready for rock climbing and ice climbing objectives. You never know what you will find in the mountains here, so better be ready for change of plans. And I love the mystery, as long as everyone is safe, it is good fun
