Another day celebrating living in Colorado with a 1,800 foot, steep (50 degree) climb on Dragon's Tail Couloir on the South face of Flattop Mountain, 12,324 Feet, in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Moe Kowbell picked me up at 3:30 am with our packs and tools for a "winter" climb in the trunk. Weather was perfect with temps in the 40s, light wind and blue skies.

Dragons Tail is very steep at times and you would not want to fall. It's mostly snow with a few sections of steep rock near the top to keep it interesting. It's often skied by experts.

The approach is from the Bear Lake parking lot, about 2 miles and 6.5 miles round trip with a total elevation gain of 2600 feet. The snow was good in the early morning but turned to mashed potatoes later but we stayed focus and finished the round trip feeling tired and satisfied with our performance.
