The summertime depletion of ozone over Antarctica (“ozone hole”) was first observed in the late 1970s. In 1987 the Montreal protocol was agreed upon - a treaty designed to phase out the production of substances responsible for ozone depletion.

Ozone depletion had many consequences, some biological (e.g.: skin cancer), some climatological. For several decades the southern Jet Stream, a powerful air current, had been moving poleward as a result of increased Co2 emissions, but from 1980 on, this southward movement became more pronounced during the summer months. Simultaneously the Antarctic Oscillation (AAO - defined by the belt of low pressures surrounding Antartica), started following a similar trend, toward a more positive index. These changes were attributed to the depletion of stratospheric ozone.
