K2 Body Recovery
Bodies have been found on 26th July. Ali and John by Sherpas from @madisonmtng during fixing ropes and JP by Valentyn Sypavin @valiksypavin.
The bodies were located in different places:
Ali and John were found above Bottleneck, at about 8300m. They were still connected to fixed ropes, one by rappel device and the other by carabiner, without oxygen masks and bottles, some think this means they died during descent.
JP was found about 20mins from C4 (on photos location is estimated as 20mins from C4)
Reason for death unknown.
Some think because bodies were found in different locations, on the correct route between C4 and Summit we can rule out a tragic accident such as avalanche, fall or broken ropes.
I'm not totally convinced, why was JP so far down from the others, in an avalanche debris field? Did he leave the other two early and return to the tent and get lost in bad weather, or did he get avalanched down? More evidence would be needed to rule out avalanche in the bottleneck.
Maybe one climber became incapacitated up high, one decided to stay near, and the other went to c4 to stage rescue?
Maybe they all started climbing/descending separately, and all stopped and froze at different points on descent?
It seems as though the two above the bottleneck were on descent because of their locations and rappel device on rope.
Did they summit? The team managed to retrieve Snorri's GoPro camera, Garmin and phone, they are being analyzed.
But with all due respect, does it matter if they made the summit? They're all deceased. Was it worth it? That's for you to decide.
RIP Ali, John and JP.
