Successful ascent of Telephone Pole Ridge with Robert on 12/25/16: This is a classic sneak route on the northeast side of Mt. San Jacinto which gains over 6,000 ft in about 2.5 miles of distance. The ridge parallels the tram route from the north, eventually intersecting the Upper Plateau just north of the upper station. The entire route took almost 12 hours due to horrible snow conditions which made much of the terrain a nightmare. Near the end it was hours of postholing up 30 degree slopes of waist deep snow.
Difficulty: class 3-4
Stats: ~3 miles 6,500 ft gain
ISC-F7C6T1
classic sneak rating: S8

The Supercanaleta, the massive couloir on the west face of Chaltén, was a popular place to spend Christmas Day. @antonkrupicka and I crossed the 'schrund just after 5am, with apparently five parties higher in the couloir. Fortunately the shower of snow and ice crystals wasn't too bad, although we arrived at the start of the technical climbing and discovered a jam of several rope teams. Everyone was friendly and seemed to be getting along well, although it was definitely a bit hectic, and downright scary when a Nomic came tomahawking past me. After a few very busy pitches, Anton and I separated from the crowds to attempt the unrepeated direct variation. There, after a couple very slow pitches, with plentiful aid moves, we decided to abandon our attempt and descend, partly because of our slow progress, partly because the terrain above looked equally slow, and partly because I felt exceptionally cold. Oh well, it was a good day out nonetheless! This photo is of Anton on the direct variation. #nosummitnoparty @lasportivana @petzl_official @patagonia_climb
