After summiting Mt. Whitney, a hiker sustained a lower leg injury on the descent approximately four miles from the Whitney Portal. @inyosheriff contacted H-82 and requested, conditions permitting, the hiker be transported from the trail to safety. At 11:00 PM last night H-80 landed near Mirror Lake at 11,000 feet. With the help of fellow hikers and H-82’s crew, the hiker was treated and transported to a local hospital. Reminder: any one at any skill level can sustain injuries or encounter problems along the trail. Planning and preparation for the unexpected greatly increases the survivability of those situations.
